- Is this contract valid in my state?
- It is a general starting template, not legal advice. Construction is a state-licensed trade, and mechanics-lien, notice, permit, and home-improvement-contract rules vary a lot by state and by project size — some states require specific notices, right-to-cancel language, or license numbers on the contract. Check your state's requirements and use a lawyer for larger or higher-risk jobs.
- What's the difference between the contract price and the payment schedule?
- The contract price is the total you agree to for the scope of work. The payment schedule (or draws) breaks that total into installments — for example a deposit, progress draws tied to milestones, and a final payment on substantial completion. Filling both in makes it clear what is owed and when.
- How are change orders handled?
- The template's terms require any change to scope, price, or schedule to be a written change order signed by both parties before that work proceeds, and treats verbal changes as non-binding. When something changes mid-job, write it up and both sign rather than relying on a handshake.
- Does this cover permits and my contractor's license?
