What is Bates numbering?

A sequential identifier — usually a prefix plus a number, like ABC-000123 — stamped on every page of a legal or discovery document set so each page can be cited uniquely. It's standard practice in litigation and document production.

Are my discovery files uploaded to add Bates numbers?

No. The numbers are stamped on your device — your PDF is never uploaded or stored on a server. You can confirm it in your browser's Network tab: nothing leaves the page. This is why privacy-conscious legal teams use it.

Is Bates numbering free?

Bates stamping — a prefix plus a running sequence across a set — is an AttachKit Pro feature. Simple page numbers (without a prefix) are free via the Header & footer tool using the {page} and {pages} tokens. Either way it happens in your browser with nothing uploaded.

Can I set the starting number and prefix?

Yes. You set the prefix and the starting number before exporting, so a new production can continue the sequence from where a prior set left off.
