Fill an employment termination letter online — free template
An employment termination letter is the written notice an employer gives an employee that their job is ending — stating the effective last day and, where the employer chooses, the reason, along with the practical wind-down details: final paycheck timing, any payout of accrued unused PTO, when benefits end and how COBRA or state continuation coverage works, and what company property to return. It keeps an already-hard conversation clear and consistent, and it is not the same as a housing "lease termination letter," which ends a rental. This is a neutral, factual starter template, not a severance agreement or a release of claims. AttachKit fills your company name, the signer, and contact details from your saved profile so you can produce a clean, respectful letter in minutes — entirely in your browser.

Who needs it: Small-business owners, startup founders, and HR or hiring managers ending an employment relationship — especially teams without a dedicated HR department who need a clear, consistent letter that covers final pay, benefits, and property return every time.

Termination Letter questions, answered
- Is this the same as a lease termination letter?
- No. This is an employment document — an employer telling an employee that their job is ending. A lease termination letter is a housing document that ends a rental between a landlord and tenant. AttachKit has a separate template for that; make sure you're using the right one.
- Do I have to state a reason for the termination?
- Usually not. In most at-will states an employer can end employment without giving a reason, and many letters simply state the effective last day. Some situations or contracts call for a stated reason or cause, and a few jurisdictions have specific notice requirements — the reason field here is optional so you can include it only when you want to or need to.
- When does the employee's final paycheck have to be issued?
- That's governed by state law and varies a lot — some states require final wages on the last day or within a set number of days, and rules on paying out accrued unused PTO differ too. The letter has fields to record the final pay date and PTO payout, but confirm the deadline that applies where the employee works.
- Is this legal advice?
- No. AttachKit is a fill-and-sign tool, not a law firm, and this is a general template. Employment separation rules — final-pay timing, PTO payout, required notices, and COBRA or state continuation coverage — vary by state and situation, so have counsel review your template once before you rely on it.
