Fill and sign a pet care agreement online — free
A pet care agreement is what a pet owner and a sitter or boarder sign before a trip or a regular arrangement. It records the pet's details, feeding and medication instructions, the care dates and fees, and — importantly — authorizes the sitter to seek emergency veterinary care up to a set limit if the owner can't be reached. Rules for pet-sitting and boarding businesses, and how liability is treated, vary by state and by any facility license.

Who needs it: Pet owners leaving a dog, cat, or other animal with a sitter, boarder, or friend; independent pet sitters and small boarding or dog-walking businesses who want a written scope, emergency-vet authorization, and fee schedule before taking on a pet.

Pet care agreement questions, answered
- Does a pet care agreement need to be notarized?
- No. A pet care agreement is a private arrangement between the owner and sitter and does not require notarization. Both parties dating and signing it is enough for it to serve its purpose as a record of what was agreed.
- Why include an emergency vet spending limit?
- If your pet is injured or falls ill while you're unreachable, the sitter needs clear authority to act. Stating a dollar limit lets the sitter approve treatment quickly while keeping costs within a range you're comfortable with. Leave your vet's and an emergency contact's phone numbers so they can be reached fast.
- Is the pet owner or the sitter responsible for vet bills?
- This template has the owner remain responsible for veterinary and related costs, except where the sitter's own negligence caused the problem. You can adjust the wording to fit your arrangement — spell out who pays and any pre-approved expenses before care starts.
- Does this cover a licensed boarding facility?
- It's a general starter template for individual owner-and-sitter arrangements. Licensed kennels and boarding businesses may face state or local rules and insurance requirements this doesn't address — check your local requirements and your insurer for anything high-stakes.
